In Big Data Discussions, I hear incorrect terminology used and false hope in how big data will change the way business is done. Although the sentiment may be true, the phrasing used is often incorrect in the context for which it is used and for what purpose. This wouldn’t normally be a big deal, but I think it’s important to distinguish between technical terms and explore how they relate to each other: big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning.

Big Data: We should all have a good concept of big data by now. Big data refers to new technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) bringing in massive data sets. These data sets are very large and complex, so we use a range of tools for data mining and businesses have emerged that specialize in housing, mining, and big data modeling. Competition in big data as a business is sometimes called “the game of picks and shovels” to capture how data is drilled, examined, and resurfaced with relevant information that allows firms to make more substantiated decisions. It is important to note that the data scientists are the people who make big data analytics possible and useful in business applications.

Artificial Intelligence: AI is a concept that encompasses when computers process data, with little or no human oversight, to make connexions between data sets with complex…
