The Wild West of AI regulation is upon us. New AI technologies have stampeded ahead with little oversight, unleashed by tech pioneers eager to stake their claim. Like the lawless frontier days, this new terrain feels totally unregulated.

As someone involved in shaping responsible AI policy, I know you probably feel overwhelmed. How do we rein in this runaway technological revolution?

I’ve been wrangling AI for over a decade across industry and government. Let me share some lessons on steering AI’s rapid development prudently, from my perspective advising organizations on navigating this regulator purgatory.

There’s no doubting AI’s massive potential, economically and socially. PwC predicts it could contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. But AI also brings huge new risks, like enabling cybercrime potentially costing $10.5 trillion annually by 2025.

We must thoughtfully balance oversight and innovation. “AI is too important not to regulate,” many argue, and I agree. But regulation without stifling progress is a delicate balancing act.
