Take care of your eyes. They are precious!

Good vision is a key factor for living a healthy and happy life. Keep your eyes safe and healthy.

Changes to the health of your eyes can happen gradually and you may not have any obvious signs or symptoms of disease. It is important to have your eyes checked on a regular basis by an optometrist or other eye care health professional. Most vision problems are avoidable or can be treated. You can take action now to keep your eyes healthy.

Here are 8 actions you can take to keep your eyes healthy:

  1. Healthy Diet: A healthy diet is very important. Eat at least 5 servings of veggies and fruits everyday. Include fresh Orange, Yellow, Red and Green colored fruits and veggies which contain good amount of Vitamin A and other antioxidants required for maintaining and improving eye health.
  2. Regular breaks from Electronic Screens: If you work on computer, laptops or your eyes are exposed to electronic screens for a long time in the day, you are required to take care of your eyes even more.
Incorporate regular breaks when working or using any sort of electronic screens. Staring at the computer and mobile phones, TV screens causes stress to the eyes and leads to tired eyes. This can also cause long-term hazards to your eyesight. Try some eye exercises and take timely breaks to relax your eye muscles.
  3. Protect your Eyes with eye gears:
    a. Workplace: Sixty per cent of all eye injuries occur at work. Use zero lenses glasses while working on a computer to avoid eyestrain. Use bigger glasses with protection at the sides over and below the eyes as well so that the eyes get covered entirely to avoid harm from hazardous chemicals or the use of machinery to cut, drill, grind, hammer, sand, spray or weld. All the above involve higher risk eye injuries.
    b. While playing sports such as fencing, squash or high-speed ball sports, or when riding a bicycle or two-wheeler auto-mobiles wear eye protection to avoid any injuries to your eyes.
    c. Wear sunglasses especially on sunny days/afternoons/on beaches to avoid the harmful ultra violet rays from entering your eyes and cause hazards.

4. Quit smoking: Smoking damages all your entire body. This includes the blood vessels that supply blood and nutrients to your eyes. If you are a smoker, quit it to improve your vision.

5. Sleep: A good night sleep always works for eyes. It gives your eyes the required amount of rest and a break from the day’s stress and supports eye health. Once you start getting enough sleep needed, you also perform better at home and work, you also look and feel fresh.

6. Regular exercise: It helps to keep your blood vessels, eyes and your body healthy.

7. Maintain and manage normal and healthy range of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. This helps in keeping your eyes and your body in general, in good shape.

8. Appropriate Lighting: While reading or writing or working ensure you have appropriate level of lighting. Too much brightness or low light may cause eyestrain.
