To maintain good overall health it is very important to maintain good dental hygiene and care as well. Here are some simple tips to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy and clean.

  1. Flossing and Brushing: Everyday floss your teeth to remove any unwanted food residue in between your teeth. If the foods stays on or in-between your teeth for a long time, the food and the teeth start decaying, eventually leading to dental caries and cavities.
  2. Brushing twice a day is recommended once in the morning and then at night before going to sleep. Keep your teeth clean before going to sleep, again this will help in preventing foods to get stuck in your teeth and thus prevent tooth decay.
  3. Avoid excessive intake of sugary and sticky foods: Sugary and sticky foods remain in your mouth and on the teeth for a long and the bacteria start acting upon it and thus in-turn the bacteria attack your teeth as well.
  4. Rinse your mouth and drink a lot of water: Rinsing your mouth after every snack or drink that you consume is a very good dental habit to promote dental health.
Drinking water is great for your overall health. It is definitely better than drinking beverages with added sugar which again may lead to tooth decay.
  5. Eat Right: Nutritionally balanced diet is not only important to maintain a healthy body but also healthy teeth and gums.
Your diet should contain all the food groups including whole wheat cereals and beans, colored veggies and fruits, skimmed milk and milk products, lean poultry and meat, fish, nuts and oils in right proportion. All these provide various nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, minerals such as calcium, fluoride, phosphorus etc., antioxidants, carbs, protein and healthy fats in the required amounts.
Don’t go overboard on any specific foods to avoid imbalance especially avoid simple sugars such as sucrose, glucose etc. as much as possible for the reasons mentioned earlier. Always remember, moderation is the key.
  6. Dental Health Check-up: You should visit a dentist at least twice in a year, even if you don’t have any dental problems.
Not only can a dentist remove calculus and look for cavities, but they will also be able to spot potential issues and offer treatment solutions. At minimum, you should see your dentist for cleanings and checkups twice a year.
