Wow! What a week. Since introducing Medal 2.0 last week you are now watching:

  • Over 1 million videos per day from other Medal Creators(not including watching your own content)
  • Across hundreds of thousands of daily unique viewers

That’s a big shift from where we started as a simple application to make clips two years ago. There has never been a better time to join Medal as a creator.

Your Impact: Medal relies on you to upvote what you think is good. So remember to upvote when you think a clip is spicy :)

So into the changes — We noticed that bad content was making it to the top of the feeds. We fixed a few problems to avoid this.

Liking wasn’t clear enough (most of you didn’t know you could do it). As a result, clips received more views but not more likes, and we continued showing that clip since our algorithms considered a “highly viewed” clip as a good one without taking the number of likes into account. When you commented it also increased the engagement score on that clip, even though some of you were echoing frustration with the quality of that clip and not leaving a positive comment. We’ve made liking more clear and made changes around how comments are scored. It even has a spicy new animation!

Skill Level: We weren’t taking your skill level into account when recommending content to viewers. This is something we’ve been working on for a long time and we will continue to tweak it, but we are now able to consider your skill level in a game into how likely we are to recommend your clip on the “For You” page of the app. Keep in mind that this does not affect any of the “Following” feeds, those are just reverse-chronological. It does apply to topic feeds, meaning that you will now see more highly skilled clips when browsing topics. Remember when your parents told you playing games didn’t get you anywhere? Well take that, now it’s official!

Tag Spamming: Spamming trending topics in your title disqualifies your clips from showing in feeds. Tag spamming is not a good way to get people to discover your clip. Focus on high-quality short moments with a high viewership value and a very focused title — that will get people to like your clip. That’s how it makes it into the top. It is true that creating around trending topics increases your chances of being discovered, but not in a way that is spammy.

Creator Analytics: If you have over 100 followers, you will now have access again to Creator Analytics. This way you can see how your viewers consume your content, where they are, and what to create more of, making for a better feed overall. Medal Partners also have access to analytics automatically.

Group Invites: We’ve made group invites better. Clicking the invite link on web now takes you into the desktop app. Sharing clips was never this easy.

As always, thanks for creating with Medal. We can’t wait to share some of the other things we’ve been working on!
