Globe and Mail Africa correspondent appearing on Panel 6: Social Media — The New Media Actor Dec. 3, 8:30–10:00
Geoffrey York is The Globe and Mail’s Africa correspondent and a veteran war correspondent who has received numerous awards for his reporting.
York is the only full-time correspondent in Africa for a Canadian media outlet. He writes news stories, features, analysis and investigative reports from all across the continent on a wide range of political, social, economic and humanitarian issues. Through his travel and reporting, he’s been able to assess the role of social media and its influence on political discourse in many countries, including in conflict zones, such as South Sudan, and in post-atrocity environments, such as Kenya and South Africa.
As a Social Media — The New Media Actor panelist, York plans to share some of his personal experiences with social media in Africa, from how it can facilitate hate speech and verbal intimidation against journalists, to how it can be a force for expanding freedom. He will present on Dec. 3 between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m.
