Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society visiting fellow appearing on Panel 3: International coverage of genocide Dec. 3, 13:15–14:45

James Siguru (Wahutu) is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Minnesota. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University.

His research interests focus on the sociology of media, genocide, mass violence, ethnicity, human rights and collective memory. His dissertation investigates how media fields in Africa construct knowledge about instances of massive human rights violations — with a particular focus on the atrocities in Darfur.

His work and research has appeared in Media, Culture, and Society, African Affairs, Global Media and Communication and Sociological Forum.

He has also written about global media patterns on the coverage of genocide in Africa with Joachim Savelsberg and on ethnicity and land politics in Kenya with Tade Okediji.

Siguru will participate in the International Media Coverage of Genocide panel on Dec. 2 from 1:15–2:45 p.m. He will discuss the challenges of reporting on mass atrocities in several African, but specifically in Darfur.
