Joachim Savelsberg is a professor in the Department of Sociology and an affiliate with the Law School of the University of Minnesota. Originally from Germany, he moved to the U.S. in 1989 after a year-long fellowship at John Hopkins and Harvard University. He holds the Arsham and Charlotte Ohanessian Chair, which is dedicated to issues of human rights and genocide. His most recent works deal with the representations and memories of mass violence, especially through legal intervention.

Savelsberg is the recipient of numerous research grants and recognition, such as the Outstanding Book Award of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (2012) for his publication “American Memories: Atrocities and the Law”, the Best Article Award by the American Sociological Association (2007), and the Outstanding Article Award of the Law & Society Association (2006).

Savelsberg will present his paper, which is an analysis of journalism on Darfur to other panelists and attendees on Dec. 3 at 10:15 a.m.
