The former UN commander in conversation with the Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent

Roméo Dallaire and Paul Watson met in Kigali for the first time in 1994 in the days leading up to the Rwanda genocide.

Dallaire had been dispatched to the capital as Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission to Rwanda. Watson, who was a foreign correspondent posted to Africa for the Toronto Star at the time, was on location to report on the escalating tensions.

In the following podcast, the two discuss the sometimes-missing connection between the military and the media, how that relationship has changed — and why it still needs to change.
