Making a Gantt is described by Smartsheet.com as a way to “ make it easy to visualize project management timelines by transforming task names, start dates, durations, and end dates into cascading horizontal bar charts.” A gantt chart can also be used to map out the format of your project and the development of ideas and conclusions because of the way that the chart progresses. Being realistic with all that goes into setting up a gantt chart not only can allow aid in the steps leading up to a paper or project but also the structure of said project or paper.

Planning out an entire project from start to finish is difficult and but something of grave importance. Knowing one’s timeline and the importance of every aspect of a project is necessary for the success of the final product. Mapping out each step and a day by day outline of work for the project allows people to visualized the steps towards the completion of their project as well as the day goals and tasks.

Accountability is important. Once someone maps out their tasks and goals on the Gantt chart it is important that they hold themselves accountable for completing their daily tasks. Setting realistic expectations as well as mapping out times that are busier or even easier to complete tasks is important. For example, if you know that you planned on going to an event to participate in participant observation you MUST hold yourself accountable. If you do not hold yourself accountable for attending events, interviews or doing research then it will throw your entire timeline off.

In addition flexibility and re-evaluation are just as important. When setting up a gantt chart it is important to think about the ways in which the project may deviate from the original plan because of findings. It is important to put time in place for flexibility and editing adjustments. For many having a daily task for something makes it easier to reach the end of a longer project.

One of the greatest things that a gantt chart helps people is realistically put a timeline into perspective. Within my own project I know that this will aide in a better execution of my project because of having a visual aid of completion and the goals and tasks that I still gave to complete. It also allows me to map out the time commitments that I have for each of the tasks that are in place in congruence to the other things that I have to do before finals. With the overwhelming amount of things that I still need to do for this project the Gantt chart allows to me realistically see what I have to do and what is going on.
