My Topic: Within each Asian American community lies a distinct set of bounds that governs and guides the members through daily life. With the emergence of prominent social media sites and communities, I am interested in researching the commonalities between daily culture and social media culture within the Asian American Communities, and how those cultures will affect the way that marketers target Asian American audiences.

Focus: More specifically, I am interested in food culture. In Asian culture, food serves as not only a basis for nutrition, but plays vital roles that extend beyond daily life. This can include maintenance and growth of interpersonal relationships, representation of social status, group identification, and symbolic significance. The ways in which these traditional Asian culture aspects on food translate to online posts about food on social media is what I will be looking at specifically.

Specification of Interviews: Asian Americans between 18–25 who self-identify as having heritage from China, Japan, Korea, or Taiwan.

Calendar:

  • Week 2: Decide on Topic and Schedule Interviews
  • Week 3: Complete Interviews and create transcripts
  • Week 4: Draw Conclusions, Outline Paper, and Begin Draft
  • Outline: Intro, and Thesis /// Background /// Ethnographic Vignettes /// Methods /// Theory & Analysis /// Conclusion
  • Week 5: Complete Draft, Complete Revisions, Submit Final

Completion of Fieldwork: I will conduct 3 interviews, gathering online sources, and pulling from class readings.
