Participant Observation notes of Super Skuj’s Twitch stream
I observed Tim Billard or Super Skuj as he is known on Twitch, by watching his stream for 1 hour starting from 4pm — 5pm. I decided to do participant observation from my own computer because I did not want to put any pressure on being in the same room as Tim. I also did not tell Tim exactly what time I would be watching because I did not want my presence to effect the way he naturally streams. What I learned was that it is necessary for Twitch streamers to constantly communicate even when chat isn’t talking. Tim was always commenting and narrating his gameplay and making it easier for those watching to understand his actions. I also learned that the speed running community is a growing and extremely close with each other. Tim received 2 hosts that raised his viewers from 25–446.
