This is a simple video experiment that examines the significance of the toy car as an object, in relation to its more practical counterpart, the automobile. My research focuses on toy car collectors, who are often car enthusiasts as well. The people who like toy cars usually also enjoy reading about, working on, and driving real cars. My research asks, what motivates these collectors? How do they imagine themselves and their identities as adult toy collectors?

In this video, I’ve put the two types of car together to encourage viewers to consider their relationship. You see each object here in the video — one driving, and one on display. Seeing this juxtaposition, consider what each object provides for its owner. Both are mass-produced and have similar characteristics, but they have very different purposes and very different exchange values.
