There is something to be said about the presence of a business or institution on social media but what goes into being an organization with a needed social presence in order to make it at an institution.

Fraternities and sororities are businesses for all intents and purposes. They have a national and local office, they have executive boards, company cards, and fees associated with membership. One of the greatest things that comes from being in the business of fraternity and sorority life is the participant's overall choosing to be a part of the organization. But that is also one of the most challenging aspects of keeping the business alive and afloat for the executive board. It important that the organization is not only satisfying to the people that are a part of it but is also appealing to future clients. What this means is that having an open and inviting social media presence is of grave importance as it generates interest and also promotes the brand.

In fraternities and sororities generally two people are in positions just to promote the chapters relations and presence. The social chairman is in charge of outreach to the greater greek community and therefore represents the chapter in external communications. The other person that is in charge of the outward appeal of the chapter is the public relations chair or webmaster. These are the people that are in charge of the chapters, facebook, instagram, snapchat, twitter, VSCO, websites along with hosting photoshoots and taking photos at events.

This is a very tedious job as it involves upwards of 200 girls to be on time, dressed correctly and in line to be able to even have material to put up on social media promoting the chapter. But this position and the attention to detail is absolutely necessary. Chapters reach out to the majority of their new members through social media and promote their recruitment season doing so. These two chairman must work with great attention and dedication to produce products and conversations, that reflect the chapter in a positive and attainable light for potentials to feel that they would want to join the group of people and “invest in the business.”

This is done through sending out forms, scheduling photoshoots, creating a database of previous images, long reports at chapter meetings that put the standards for the event or photoshoot out step-by-step for the active members.

While this work often goes unnoticed at the time comes with great perks through positive comments once videos and photos are released or a social or pinning goes well and the chapter feels that they are being represented well. But it does give the people in these positions great marketing and communication skills to use in the future and adding the role to their resume with a description allows their employers to see that they know how to deal with brand promotion, on a tight schedule, future planning and so much more, and thats why experiences like this are also available in the chapter.
