You are the future, We are the future, I am the future
I have never cared for politics and the laws, legislation, or anything else that affected millions of people in our country. However, after this election season my views completely changed and so did the views of many others. Trump versus Clinton became the big debate among friends, families, and/or strangers on social media which eventually turned into Trump versus everyone after his inauguration.
It’s an important time in our country’s history with people asking “what happens next?” Policy changes are becoming much more prominent during the Trump administration, but our country is still fighting back against these changes. Millennials, especially college students, became much more active in showing and sharing their opinions regarding politics through social media and clothing. Protests, donations, and more have all been the main components in a millennial’s political life and this is doubtful to end any time soon.
As the Trump administration repeals and creates laws that affect how people, especially minorities in our country, live everyday life we have people refusing to sit down and accept these changes. Facebook has allowed for facebook events, such as the Women’s March, to garner from individuals around the world. Twitter has allowed for organizations, such as ACLU, to tweet about recents event in the political landscape and ask for donations.
Millennials and social media go hand and in hand so it’s no surprise this is the path so many people, especially students, have chosen to go during the political firestorm. I am always posting on Twitter, Facebook, and more about current events happening in our country as well as around the world. While sharing information is helpful it does not mean that change will come. The only way for change to happen is to go out and do something. Posting online is only the first step.
Writing to senators and taking part on the International Day of Women created by the same people who hosted the Women’s March are all activities you can participate in. Do your part to show that you are not going to sit and stand by as people’s rights are taken away without any thought to how it affects them. Someday we will be the people taking control of the government and changing laws, but in a good way. We understand that differences existence and we accept these differences. We don’t shun someone because of the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, or their religion.
