One of the first concepts that we learned about in Media Studies is the way various literature forms can be used for research. Essays, books, quantitative, and qualitative research all plays a role in where a person begins when diving into a subject. This is exactly what my goal was for this project, to establish another medium that can be a starting point for people who want to learn more about a topic.
To do this I took to Instagram to create an account dedicated to the Me Too Movement and some of the literature surrounding it. Starting with the history, then moving to the figureheads, and lastly looking at both scholarly and news articles that looked at positive and negative aspects of the movement.
The biggest problem that I faced was deciding whether or not this idea worked. How do you establish a literature review on a platform that is used to showcase people’s highlight reels? I had to create a post that was both visually appealing to gain clicks but also contained enough information to serve as an educational tool. To do this I broke down the key points of the article and kept the bulk of the content to just those key points. I indicated the sources of all the information to allow people to dive deeper into the article if they decide to. I also broke up the educational posts with pictures or memes that related to the Me Too Movement to create a balance of education and visual enjoyment.
The second problem that I faced while working on this project was determining what articles to use. Something that was very important to me in making this page was creating a project that was unbiased. In order to do this it was important to showcase both the positives and negatives of the movement which was done by dissecting a scholarly and news article that looked at the negatives and a scholarly and news article that looked at the positives. It was also important to showcase all aspects of the movement which is where Figureheads is broken down into men and women. Most people think of the Me Too Movement as just a women’s movement but there have been many men that have also experienced sexual assault and it’s vital that when thinking of the mission of “riding the world of sexual assault” that includes men.
Balancing the idea of fun and educational content wasn’t necessarily the easiest concept to achieve and it came with a lot of hardships. However, social media has become a more and more popular place to learn new information and form beliefs. Another idea that we talked a lot about in this class was propaganda and how it can be both good and bad. When creating unbiased content I think it eliminates the propaganda aspect of the topic. @metoomovement_litreview attempts to showcase the movement in a light that doesn’t sway your opinion one way or another, rather gives you the information you need to form your own opinion.
