College is a special time in many people’s life where they gain true knowledge in the classroom, learn a lot about themselves, and figure out the person they want to become. Many college experiences set people up for success in the future while some college experiences are filled with wasted opportunities. One of the biggest reasons people waste their opportunities in college is many people believe college is nothing but partying. People believe college is nothing but partying because of Instagram accounts that glamorize drinking alcohol, doing drugs, and doing truly moronic things and damaging property and their bodies.

Certain Instagram accounts are full of videos and pictures that glamorize partying in college. These accounts make viewers believe once you are in college you must drink, do drugs, and doing something physically damaging to get featured on one of these accounts.

The biggest problem with these accounts is the way it makes people think how they need to act once they are in college. These videos are filled with humungous parties with people having the time of their life doing nothing but partying. The videos do an excellent job of making partying in college look like it’s something you can do every day and have endless fun with no repercussions. These types of videos have gotten so popular and have been seen so much it’s a lot of peoples first exposure to college social life. So when they get to college they realize that they have the chance to live the life they have seen on these videos and that’s all they can think about and it’s all that they try to do. These videos give a false reality that college is a resort with no responsibilities where you can go and party for 4 years straight with no parents, no class and no responsibilities and it’s a problem for many people.

My brother struggled with this idea when he was in college when he was exposed to these videos. My brother went to school to study civil engineering which is a very rigorous major and requires a lot of studying and big projects that require a lot of time to complete. In of his breaks from studying and doing homework he checked his Instagram feed and the first post he was a Instagram account showing a huge college party with people laughing and drinking looking like they are happy as can be. When my brother saw these videos he got upset because his peers were having so much fun with college while he wasn’t able to have those experiences. He began to question everything about his school and how he wishes he could live the life other people are living in these videos. He was no longer concerned about academics because all he could think about was the life he can’t live with the school he’s at and how he wants be like everybody else in these videos.

I’m not saying college should be all work and give people zero chance to have fun. What I am saying is these videos give people the wrong idea of how there life should be in college. These videos make it hard for people to get there priorities right in college because all they want to do is have the life that’s in these videos. College is filled with fun times, but these videos are a bad influence on the true importance of what the true purpose of college and takes away from academics.
