Below is summary evidence about thimerosal and neurotoxicity adapted from Up to Date.

● A causal association between thimerosal-containing vaccines and neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, has not been established. Although biologic mechanisms for such an association have been proposed, the information upon which the hypotheses are based is indirect and incomplete and the potential mechanisms are considered theoretical. (Immunization Safety Review: Vaccines and Autism. A report of the Institute of Medicine., The National Academies Press, Washington, DC 2004.)

● Thimerosal exposure from vaccines has not been proven to result in mercury levels associated with toxic responses; after exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines, ethylmercury appears to be rapidly eliminated from the blood of infants with gestational age >32 weeks, with an estimated half-life of 3.7 days. 1. (Pichichero ME, Gentile A, Giglio N, et al. Mercury levels in newborns and infants after receipt of thimerosal-containing vaccines. Pediatrics 2008; 121:e208.)

●There is no evidence that ethylmercury causes any of the pathophysiologic changes that are known to be associated with autism.
