Medicohealth: Faster laboratory procedures mean less waiting times!

SRC Infonet’s hospital information system includes a laboratory module for comprehensive medical laboratory procedures. It is used to assist all processes and test result issuing.

Integration in SRC Infonet’s hospital information system enables electronic test ordering and result receiving. Tests, specimens as well as order forms are unified with laboratory data. It allows ordering of a set of tests defined in advance, as well as ordering for several patients at the same time. Results are automatically transferred into electronic health records of patients.

Lab modules

The solution is based on the basis of internationally acknowledged clinical laboratory CLSI standards. Lab module has a modular setup. Individual modules independently complement each other; each of them has its own set of functionalities.

1. “Lab” is the central module. It covers all work procedures that are performed in a laboratory.

2. “Administration” covers administration of orders and sending orders into other laboratories, patient test orders through order entry screens, reviewing the status of patients, orders, samples and tests as well as reviewing and printing test results.

3. “Technical” sub-module includes the core of all laboratory procedures. Several technicians are available, e.g. hematological, biochemical, immunological, urinary. Each laboratory technician has three main sets of operations available:

a. Test — procedures with active orders/samples/tests,

b. Delayed — procedures with delayed (postponed until later) orders/samples/tests,

c. Analysers — procedures with analysers.

4. “Supervisor” is a module for higher-level procedures in a laboratory, mainly intended for laboratory managers, who can choose between three functions; test overview, history and control.

5. “Ana” is designed for communication with laboratory analyzers and enables connection of over 100 different analyzers. It is possible to connect every medical device that enables RS232 communication. One-way and two-way communication is enabled as well as complete automation of connection with bar-code use.

6. “Oda” is a module for communication between remote laboratories on different locations and connection between laboratories in different healthcare institutions. Oda enables smaller laboratories to send tests into larger laboratories and receive results using a safe communication path.

7. “Stat” (statistics) enables different statistical procedures of data, which are gathered in a laboratory database. Usually, monthly statistics are processed according to tests or orders. It also enables different graphical result presentations, which clearly show the quantity of work according to selected criteria in a selected time period.

8. “Kon” (Quality control) is a module of control or laboratory quality assurance. The module Kon enables internal quality control of work and analyser processes. It enables several different kinds of statistics for analyser process analyses, such as Westgard rules, double diagram, today-yesterday method and graph of frequency distribution. Kon enables control of all analysers in one place.

9. “Evi” (Inventory) is a module for full control of laboratory material use, ordering and distribution (especially the use of analyser reagents). This module is the easiest way of managing purchasing and use of laboratory material. It is also designed for communication with the central warehouse and working with suppliers using e-mail.
