I work in Study Management which enables clients to improve efficiencies throughout the clinical trial process. At a company of this size with multiple focus areas and constant developments, I’ve noticed it’s hard to keep up with what other tech teams are doing around Medidata. Meditech has really helped to increase transparency about what other teams are doing, especially in the London office. I wanted to contribute to Meditech and thought perhaps the best way I could do it was by hosting. I think it also served as a way to improve my public speaking skills, which has been a personal goal of mine.

MediTech comprises of two to three talks, 15 mins each with time for feedback and questions from the audience. The sessions are similar to all-hands meetings where the platform is open for any type of questions, ideas, and comments. The first talk was given by Ben Sheron. Ben works in Strategic Monitoring on Scribe, which facilitates the storing of documentation from patient visits. There was a memory leak in Scribe which caused the program to eventually come to a stop and have to be restarted. Typically when a program runs, it should clear out it’s memory after it’s finished executing a command, but a memory leak is when for some reason it stores a portion of this command to its memory and over time the memory gets full and the program topples over. Ben thought this leak came from a poorly configured cluster, but after looking at the 3rd party libraries he used he realized that Kamon was implemented incorrectly. Kamon is used for generating logs, however, it was creating logs with high cardinality values and thus the memory leak ensued.

The second talk was by Ali Ustek in Site Monitoring, which manages the full cycle of visits. For some, writing validation documents can be quite tedious, Ali’s talk focused on methods to make that task less strenuous. He demonstrated a tool that automatically generates validation documents.
