Editor Newsletter: Publication newsletters are reaching 2x as many recipients
Plus editing best practices, tons of educational resources for new writers, and Medium Day 2025 is coming!
Hi editors,
I know you’re busy, so let’s start today a little differently. Here’s the TL;DR of today’s newsletter. Feel free to read on as many of the relevant sections as you’re interested in.
Short on time? Here are the 5 main takeaways from this newsletter:
- Publication newsletters are being sent to about 2x as many recipients after we improved deliverability, so newsletters are sent to all subscribers, not just the ones who were recently active. (Navigate to that section)
- Medium Day 2025: It’s hitting your screens Sept 19, 2025! Here’s the announcement, and here’s the link to register. (Navigate to that section)
- Looking for ways to take your publication (and your pub’s writers) to the next level? Several fantastic editors were kind enough to share their editing process with me. Here’s what they recommend. (Navigate to that section)
- We’re launching a ton of basic educational content on the Medium Handbook and our YouTube channel. Check them out — they may contain useful resources for you to pass on to new writers! (Navigate to that section)
- We’ve also launched 3x weekly Medium 101 webinars. Send your newbie writers to them here! (Navigate to that section)
Read on for the full version of each section.
Your publication newsletters are reaching 2x more readers
You may remember getting an email in April about how we improved publication newsletter deliverability–I mentioned it in last month’s editor newsletter, too.
I’m happy to report that this improvement resulted in a 2x increase in recipients. You may have seen the raw views, reads, and click-through rates increase (though the percentage of recipients who read the newsletter may have dropped since those emails are now hitting folks who haven’t been active in a while).
Our improvements are aimed at helping you reach your audience, so our team was excited to see that overall, publication newsletters across Medium are reaching 2x more potential readers.
Want more information on how to use your publication newsletter? Here’s the help center article on it. It can be a great way to reach your writers and readers with news, updates, and recommendations.
(How) do you use your publication newsletter? Reply to let me know!
Medium Day 2025: Just Start Writing
We’re back! Medium Day 2025 is on Sept 19, 2025. This year’s theme is Just Start Writing. We’ll have Medium writers across all kinds of topics speak about one story they’ve written — their expertise about it, the process of writing the story, outcomes for having shared it, and more.
Aside from speakers, we’ll have CEO Tony’s keynote speech (see last year’s here), as well as activities and behind-the-scenes sessions.
One thing to note: This year, Medium Day is on a Friday, since we received feedback that Saturdays are tough for many folks to swing.
We can’t wait to see you there! Read more about it here. Use this link to register.
Editing best practices
“I love being able to help [writers] with their weaknesses and let their strengths shine. That’s the reward of editing.”
Last month, I asked for your best editing practices, and many of you sent me absolute gems of wisdom. , editor at Wise & Well, also added a “why,” which I highlighted above.
If you’re a newer publication editor or you’re interested in learning more about what some of the most involved publication editors do to help their writers’ stories shine, read the story here.
Thank you again if you sent me an email with your editing process — it really emphasizes that Medium publications are our community hubs.
I also asked writers to write in to let me know which editors they love working with and why. I got 37 great responses — too many to highlight just a few! — and published the story here.
Medium 101 webinars
There’s a lot about Medium that isn’t immediately clear to new writers — and we know how much you do to help orient them, from explaining how to submit stories to publications to educating them about topics and paywalls.
That’s why we’ve launched Medium 101 webinars–a tour through Medium, designed for total beginners.
Feel free to send your brand-new writers to these webinars. We’ll walk them through how the editor works, what the partner program is, tips for success, and a live Q&A at the end. We host them three times a week!
Hopefully, after watching our webinar, writers will have submission-ready stories and you can focus more of your energies on what you do best: editing their work.
A bunch of new resources for new writers, written and videoed
“How do I join the Medium Partner Program?”
“How can I publish on Medium?”
“What are Medium topics and how should I use them?”
These are questions that you have probably answered dozens of times!
For those writers who have a basic idea of how Medium works and don’t need the webinar, but who still have a one-off question, I’ve started filming short tutorials that address these basic questions.
You can find the video versions here on our YouTube channel, and the written versions here on the Medium Handbook blog. I’ll publish a new one every week.
If there’s a question you get from new writers all the time and you wish you had a handy dandy video or story you could send, let me know — I’d love to make your job a little easier.
Thanks, as always, for your work to build communities on Medium.
Happy editing!
– Zulie
