“What’s up, mind reader?” A guy said as he passed me at the bar. I laughed. How quickly this information has spread is remarkable. It’s all remarkable.

I was having a drink at a Chicago spot in Boystown. My cards were laid out before me. I had just given the bartender his “weekly” reading and together we’ve been working on an ongoing issue in his personal life. As he was marveling over the accuracy of my reading, I was marveling over something else.

I am now a practicing psychic/medium with a growing reputation for my uncanny abilities.

Just a couple of months ago I was reeling from my “psychic initiation” and figuring out what to do with all this knowledge that had suddenly entered my brain, my life and my living space.

Since that time, a mess of flash cards that I bought at Target and dumped on the floor of my apartment has become a therapeutic tool. And I am sure there are a whole lot of science-based reasons for why this deck seems to be so powerful, but right now it is a marvelous thing. That it even exists at all.

I did not set out to make this nor did I understand what was happening, all I know is that I know have purpose and vision with a clear direction with what I want, need and desire out of life. This deck scared me so much that at one point I threw it in the trash. The stains on the cards are from orange peels.

Last night I gave my first psychic reading to a business. It is a bar that is “patron challenged” and I have some history with the place so it wasn't exactly a cold reading.

Rather than get into the specifics of what the reading was about because that’s private between the owner and myself. There were remarkable coincidences and undeniable proof that we had tapped into “something” and I developed a technique right there on the spot to address specific concerns and problems. But more than that, I gave him solutions.

He was able to let his guard down and really think about what he wanted within the safety and confines of this psychic reading. And as we got further into the reading, I felt myself being pulled by the “energy” of the place. And that energy had something to say. I gave him clear reasons why he was “patron challenged” and gave him a bucketload of ideas some of which he had already been turning over in his mind.

A small business owner can get too mired in the day to day operations. Will the employees show up for work? Can I afford to pay them if they do? How much longer can I work 18 hour days with no pay? Why is my dream turning into a nightmare?

And I am going to make a bold statement here. That businesses fail because sometimes owners want them to.

Ideas are the new currency

My psychic abilities are paired with a lifetime of experience in marketing and promotions. I am tech-savvy, socially networked and creative as hell. I can write, read, talk and dance. Studying improv at Second City helped me become a great public speaker. Everyone should take a class on improv. It could save your life, your job or your business.

My first office was job was designing presentations for programmers to teach end-users how to operate call-routing software. Funny story about that, I had gone into their office to interview for a receptionist position and walked out with a job in their marketing department.

My next job was as an Implementation Specialist where I would travel the country and install computer systems in factories and offices as part of an on-demand labeling system. I am pretty sure that’s all I can say about that.

After that, I ran a popular website based on my life that was years ahead of the social media revolution. I started a publishing company and published two books and only closed shop due to lack of submissions. I’ve been a two-time speaker at South By Southwest, met thousands of people and managed to keep my head above water even as the flood waters rose to take away everything. Not too long ago I was homeless and even at one point lived in my car. I’ve come a long way, baby.

Over the years I’ve worked in a promotional capacity for some of the biggest brands in the world and I paid attention during all those training sessions. But more than that, I tried to read between the lines of what “script” the marketing team had come up with for us Brand Ambassadors to say to their customers in the real world. The dissonance was sometimes alarming and I understood how the legal team and the marketing team had to work together to come up with something that would work. Oftentimes the script came out looking like it had been translated into Chinese and then into Elvish and then back into English and we had to say it EXACTLY AS WRITTEN. Inflection and body language became my best friends as I tried to work that into something so that those same customers wouldn't roll their eyes.

These days customers can smell a Brand Ambassador from a mile away and it takes every ounce of restraint when I see a BA out in the field thinking they are getting away with standing behind a table getting paid for doing nothing. It makes me sad to see a poorly executed campaign or that I have to drive the interaction and literally pull the key messages out of the person who is being paid to relay them to me.

I learned more from working for Big Tobacco than anything. I was raised on a tobacco farm in Kentucky. Tobacco is in my blood. I learned how to promote a product without promoting the product. And I knew our education system was in trouble when, during a training session here in Chicago, where Brand Ambassadors from around the country were screened a short film on how cigarettes were made. The resounding sentiment from most of them was: “Tobacco’s a plant?!?”

So how did this farm boy from Kentucky manage to do all of this? To write books that many consider way ahead of their time? To pick up skills easily and with an aptitude like I’ve attended a training session. I can read a book just by flipping through it, and that’s no joke. In the present moment I see both the past and the future. I’m not a liar or a charlatan and I genuinely want to help people. And I know that anything is possible if only you believe it is possible.

How is this possible?

Before I left the bar in Boystown, I passed by a business owner that I had met a few months previous. He said hello but I was on my way out the door and suddenly I got the message that this guy needed a reading. So I pulled out my deck and began and within moments he was a believer.

‘You’re amazing,” he said about halfway through. Certain cards kept coming up. The Kangaroo, the manatee and the Umbrella. And he was there with two of his employees so I gave one of them a reading as well. Before too long the other employee was at my side. “I’m next,” he said.

The three readings taken together was a team-building exercise like I had never witnessed. Even I am taken aback sometimes by the magic in my own life and I am so lucky that I get to spread that to others.

Before I left he asked me how much I would charge to come give readings to the guests at his upcoming party. “You have a gift and it is marvelous,” he said and for the first time during all of this, I allowed myself to take the compliment.

Far too many people in my life recently have called me crazy, deluded, insane and mentally ill. And it is with joy in my heart that the balance has shifted from those cat-calls of sickness into affirmations of what has happened to me. It is nothing short of miraculous.

I have the experience, the drive and the ambition. I can also read minds. Wow, I am so lucky.
