How To Deal With Condescending People

Standing up for yourself without being a jerk

If you’ve had much to do with people, you will know at least one person who is condescending either to you or other people. Conversely, you can be the condescending one. Are you judging others for making decisions you consider stupid? Do you criticise those in leadership positions? We have all had times when we’re condescending toward others.

However, there are people with whom we have to deal who sound like parents either because of their tone, body language, or what they say. Imagine receiving an email from your line manager that reads, “Can you please have a look on page 3 of the document and tell me what the mistake is?”

How will you react when you see the person again, or what will you say?

It behoves us to know how to handle ourselves around these people or in situations like this. I am usually lost for words when someone is being rude, so I struggle to think of clever comebacks. However, everything I should have said came rushing to my mind after leaving the scene, except now it’s too late. To compensate, I indulge in what someone described as “comeback fantasies” before realising what I am doing.

I have learnt that it is crucial to be prepared for these situations to handle them better…
