A quick update for the community…we’ve been busy since the beta 2.3 release a few weeks ago and Hippocrates beta 2.4 is now live on Ropsten. There are a few major changes that we’ve packed into this update.

Integration with MakerDAO contracts

Beta 2.4 now supports payment in ETH. As we’ve written about before, proprietary medium-of-exchange tokens fail to capture significant value and may actually limit network adoption due to lack of liquidity and limited token availability.

Not only do we now support payment in ETH, but the price for an evaluation is dynamically calculated based on the price of ether at the time of case submission. Whether ETH is trading at $100 or $1000, the price of an evaluation on Hippocrates will always be constant at $10 (or $15 for a discounted second opinion).

New case contracts

The Hippocrates case logic incentivizes physicians to offer honest evaluations and gives patients recourse if they feel the evaluation was not accurate. This game-theoretic design is what allows the DApp to function completely autonomously. In previous releases, there were some edge cases in which patient or physician funds could be locked up in the smart contract while awaiting user input. These edge cases really became apparent with the beta 2.3 release in which beta testers performed the function of doctors. We have upgraded the contracts and now cover all edge cases allowing either party to retrieve their funds.

After 48 hours of inactivity, physicians can close cases and get paid
After 24 hours of inactivity, patients can retrieve their funds or assign the case to another doctor

Patient-Physician Matching Engine

While technically this will be an unstoppable DApp which runs exactly as programmed without any possibility of censorship, our physicians on the DApp still hold medical licenses and we wouldn’t want any of their actions on the DApp to come into conflict with local regulations.

For this reason, we have built a matching engine that ensures that a physician will not be matched to a patient that local or international regulations prohibit. As an example, a physician in California cannot provide a medical diagnosis to a patient in Illinois. The matching engine now excludes the possibility of these matches.
