Meedan and Pop-Up Newsroom are extremely honored that Verificado 2018 has been named one of three finalists for the Online Journalism Awards #OJA18, in the category “Excellence in Collaboration and Partnerships”. Winners will be announced at the Online News Association Conference and Awards Banquet on Sept. 15, in Austin, TX.

🏆 Excellence in Collaboration and Partnerships 🏆

This award honors newsrooms and companies who have formed partnerships or collaborations to cover a topic or story with a digital focus. We’re excited to honor entries that show creativity and innovation through partnerships that result in outstanding journalism.

Verificado 2018 is a collaborative election reporting initiative to debunk viral and potentially harmful misinformation around the 2018 elections in Mexico. Verificado is the largest ever collaborative initiative of its kind in Latin America, with over 90 partners from media, academia and civil society working together to debunk viral misinformation, fact check politicians’ claims and verify reports on the electoral process.

Verificado was launched in March 2018 by AJ + Español, Animal Político and Pop-Up Newsroom, with support from Facebook Journalism Project and Google News Initiative. In the course of the project Verificado amassed over 400,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter, and content produced by the project has been viewed millions of times by audiences across Mexico.

Pop-Up Newsroom, co-founded by Meedan in partnership Dig Deeper Media, designs and iterates roles, responsibilities and collaborative workflows using human-centered design methods. During the campaigns and on election day, a unique team of journalists worked to verify and debunk media and viral information, using Check, Meedan’s open source collaborative verification and fact checking platform.

Last year, Electionland and CrossCheck won Online Journalism Awards #OJA17, both ambitious collaborative reporting projects run using Check.

Check, Meedan’s open source collaborative verification and fact checking platform, has been used in election monitoring projects in Egypt, USA, France, UK, Kenya, Mexico, Zimbabwe.
