Meesho was a story waiting to be told — Director of Community Malvika Tegta on how telling stories of our Meesho entrepreneurs has been a transformative life experience

A former journalist with stints at The New Indian Express, DNA and FirstPost, and a B2B startup founder — Director of Community, Malvika Tegta says working with Meesho entrepreneurs (resellers) closely has been a transformative experience. From laying Meesho’s brand foundation to curating a successful multi-city Women Entrepreneurship Summit — Mission Rise and currently growing a thriving Meesho Community, Malvika’s stint at Meesho has been immensely rich.
Let’s hear it from Malvika about her Meesho story!
I joined Meesho in April 2018 as Head of Branding. It was a huge opportunity to start from scratch in a domain that was new — women resellers in small town India. Immediate direction came from the first survey I sent out calling for our resellers’ stories (Resellers are Meesho’s True North). We received over 500 diverse, powerful stories of empowerment. It was clear that this was going to be the core of Meesho’s brand story.
It was a story waiting to be told!
And it continues to be so, though much bigger, as the Meesho Community team marches to carve out a powerful new space for lakhs of our women entrepreneurs across India.
We started with the telling of these stories and created ‘WeHearYou’ — a monthly video newsletter — with Vidit Aatrey, our CEO as the face of Meesho, a leader who the resellers could look up to and trust for direction — including everything from new updates and how to do business on the app. At that time, the foundation of Meesho Business Academy — MBA for Resellers was also laid, that today is a dedicated vernacular education programme led by the Activation Org.
Meesho organised India’s largest Women Entrepreneur Community

As our reseller base scaled, our CEO shared his vision of creating a community space where our entrepreneurs could learn, share their experiences and find recognition. With VP — Activation & Community Jaya Jha coming in, Meesho Community came into being as a space on the app which today has 1 lakh+ members — and launch of Mission Rise — Women Entrepreneurship Summit — a celebration of our entrepreneurs across India. Mission Rise has travelled to 18 cities and recognized more than 1,800 women entrepreneurs. It’s been a great learning!
If we compromise on integrity, we lose our biggest strength!
The value that resonates with the Community team the most is Acting with Integrity because Meesho is a brand built on relationships. Our team is perhaps the closest to our entrepreneurs and relationship-building is our mainstay. We follow a very heart-to-heart approach in dealing with our entrepreneurs.
At no point can you be inauthentic — either in your communication or in your intent. That is the core of our brand and if that is something we compromise on, we’ll lose our biggest strength, the goodwill Meesho has earned through delivering care.
Lessons for life

Professionally, it has been great to be instrumental in carving out a rewarding entrepreneurial space for lakhs of Indian women. Personally, as interactions with our entrepreneurs deepen — thanks to Community — it’s given me real insight into privilege and the absence of it. To see what even the slightest recognition, empowerment and care can mean for someone who has long been waiting for it. That has been transformative!
