What’s it like working in Meesho?

I joined Meesho an year back as the second guy in the Product Team.

The reason I joined Meesho was simple —

I had interviewed with 5–6 people including the founders and I found everyone to be incredibly smart, honest & passionate. They weren’t delusional like most young founders and had proven their business model with some decent traction.

Within a few weeks after joining, I realised that I was working crazy long hours without anybody telling me to. I was thoroughly enjoying the pace at which we were growing as a business — and wanted to contribute as much as I could.

Fast forward 1 year, Meesho is growing as fast as before — and I can’t be more excited about going to the office every single day. We are now backed by leading investors across the globe, and on a mission to build the biggest social-commerce company in the world.

If you are someone looking for your next big gig — here are 6 things that excite me the most about Meesho, and might excite you too :

1. We are building a unique product

Let’s be honest — most product teams in India are building stuff that already exists in the west. These teams already know what features to build in the next 12 months, and it’s mostly about execution and project management.

At Meesho, our challenge lies in building a product that’s never been built before. The social-commerce market is just beginning to explode — and we’re constantly reinventing our product to win this market. We (thankfully) don’t have anyone to copy from, and want to build a unique product that can inspire social-commerce across the globe.

We have a long way to go — but we seem to be on track and are one of the few apps on Play Store with 10 million+ Downloads and a 4.5+ rating.

2. Our team is full of (super) smart & entrepreneurial folks

While interviewing with Meesho, I was fairly certain that I would be one of the least smart guys in this team. I was also certain that the team was too smart to hire me — but luckily, they decided to give me a shot.

One thing that excites me the most about the team is — Almost all our core-team members are ex-founders themselves. This creates a magical atmosphere to work where there is a low tolerance for bullshit and nobody is hesitant to get their hands dirty.

People are passionate about what they do and are hungry to contribute. Doesn’t matter how much you know — there’s plenty to learn from people all around. Convincing entrepreneurs to join a company is one of the hardest things to do and it makes us proud that we have been able to attract so many of them.

3. We love our customers and they love us back

Our customers are the reason we exist, and we don’t take that lightly.

We’ve built something that’s helped thousands of people start their own business. We are humbled by stories every single day of people changing their lives with the help of Meesho.

We are obsessed about our customers — and keep calling/messaging them regularly. We have a dedicated day every 2 months where all team members (product, tech, design) just call customers for feedback. Our CEO Vidit shoots a monthly video addressing all positive/negative feedback we get from these customers— and we even celebrate popular occasions by inviting them to our office.

4. We are outcome-driven & brutally honest

Working in Meesho is like working with college-buddies. If a colleague is saying or doing something stupid, nobody is afraid to point that out — even if that’s the CEO. If a project is not working out, we accept our failure and move to the next one. We respect difference in opinions and are quick to debate and arrive at a conclusion.

We care solely about the metrics we want to move, and not about the number-of-hours spent in office (even though most of us like spending long hours in the office). Every employee is treated equally and the work you do is considered way more important than your college, degree or experience.

As an example — Our lead Android engineer Vibin is the youngest guy in our 50 people tech team, and I don’t even remember the name of the college he came from. He built a music streaming app and sold it off when he was still in college and joined Meesho as a fresher to build the V1 of our app.

5. We move-fast and trust each other

Meesho’s growth curve has been phenomenal, and hardly anyone in the team has witnessed something like this before. One of the key reasons for this growth is that everyone in the team enjoys a lot of responsibility and are allowed to move fast with it.

This means — you can build a case for anything and everything that you want to do in this company, and if you’re making sense : you’ll get all the support to lead and execute. To move fast, we build features incrementally and aren’t shy of coming up with hacky MVPs to validate our hypothesis.

Almost everyone is working on new challenges and enjoy high ownership — which leads to a massive scope of personal growth. The founders show immense faith in people to do the things they have never done before, and are focussed on keeping the team as lean as possible.

6. We have quite a lot of fun

Amidst all the hustle — we make sure to have our fair share of fun.

Since people enjoy each others’ companies, they are always finding news ways to spend more time with each other. We go out for sports once a week — and there are a bunch of parties/outings going on every month. Here are a few of them :

We recently went on a trip to Goa to celebrate our latest growth numbers.
This is our team winning 4th prize in a 5k relay run. Our CEO Vidit (on the right) had the worst timing of all, and has hence been put on a performance-improvement-plan.
We also organised our own internal cricket tournament after we got brutally knocked out in the first-round of an external cricket tournament. FYI — Our office boy on the left (purple shirt) played better cricket than most of the guys flaunting the ‘V’ symbol in this photo.

That sums up my journey in Meesho so far.

Joining Meesho has been a roller-coaster ride for most employees, and we are excited about building a kickass product that can impact billions of people.

We are always looking to add smart & passionate people to our team — and are hiring across levels in product, tech, data & design.
