11,500 people and counting have asked Cleo ‘can I afford…’. They’ve hit her up about everything from pizza and pedicures to a new pool — so we went ahead and built it.

‘Can I afford’ gets to the core of what Cleo does. Cleo is responsive: she understands your questions, and gives you immediate, easy-to-digest intelligence in return— whether that’s an on-the-run query about whether you can afford to grab a coffee, or the long-term decision to buy a car.

We’re looking towards a future in which Cleo can support you through every financial decision, big or small. When you’re wondering if you can afford a coffee, she’ll take into account that 2-bed flat you’re hoping to buy one day. ‘Can I afford’ is one of many steps in that direction.

How does it work?

  • Ask Cleo ‘can I afford’ — plus an item or amount.
  • She can guess the price of a lot of items. If she’s not sure, she’ll ask you for a figure.
  • Cleo will predict how much you’re going to spend that month, and whether the item will leave you in the red.
  • If you’ve got a budget set up, she’ll work out how the item slots into that.
  • If it’s a big-ticket item, she’ll assess how long you’d have to save in order to afford it.
