Hemp Oil: The King of Sports Nutrition

Global Industry Analysts Inc. predicts that the sports nutrition market will top $6 billion USD by 2018. When it comes to hemp, there are a select few companies who are adopting hemp products into their nutrition catalogues, but it is no way near having it’s full potential realised.

Many athletes support their strict diets using a range of supplements from powdered whey protein to capsules containing amino acids. However the trend right now seems to be moving towards functional foods. Is it the right time for the sports nutrition producers to shift their focus on hemp oil now?

What Do Athletes Need To Include In Their Diet?

Generally speaking, athletes of any kind will need an intake of protein and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Why? No matter if you’re a bodybuilder or more of an endurance athlete, you need to increase your protein intake. Protein is useful for recovery and growth of the muscles. When you work out, the muscle tissue is broken and needs to be repaired to grow. You know the feeling of sore muscles after exercise? This is the cannibalization of the muscle tissue that causes the soreness, and protein helps to reduce it. That’s why you should always consume protein post workout.

The essential fatty acids are required for a well-working cardiovascular, immune and nervous system. Omega 3 fatty acids help with soreness after the workout, and reduces swelling in case of injury.

Why Is Hemp Suitable For Athletes?

Hemp oil is comprised of 25 % protein. Furthermore, this protein is easily digestible and unlike many other oils, doesn’t add unnecessary calories. Protein found in hemp oil, is very similar to proteins found in meats and eggs in terms of amino acids composition.

Regarding the fatty acids, hemp oil is the perfect match as well. It contains a 3:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids, and is also a source of a scarce type of omega 6 called GLA (gamma linolenic acid). This type of fatty acid helps to build anti-inflammatory hormones and supports a healthy metabolism for fat burning as well. You can’t typically find GLA in any other food apart from hemp oil, spirulina, blackcurrant oil and borage oil.
