Philip K. Dick is very much concerned with the idea of what separates humans and humanoid robots (androids). Not only is this clear from his novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but from many of his other works as well. He especially emphasizes empathy as the main distinction between “normal” (organic) humans and their artificial counterparts. Indeed, he is known for stating that “the true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. No, the true measure of a man is this: how quickly can he respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give.”
