Media, Mobile and the Market

Today we will look at a philosophy that exists in the marketplace. The market decides.

Right now there is a huge surge of mobile apps surfacing. When you think about it this it is interesting because mobile provides a huge opportunity for creating community and developing new ways to problem solve. Which is why we are seeing things pop up like mightybell and other platforms seeking to capitalize on the power of network effects.

Last month Gary Vaynerchuck published a list of mobile apps he’s paying attention to. The list includes Anchor, Afterschool and Peach. But he too knows that trying them out and seeing what sticks is the best strategy, as you never know what will catch.

Techcrunch Disrupt NY also explored what’s hot. Casey Neistat launched Beme, B.J Novak makes Li.st.

Another article by Andrew Chen suggests that there are mobile apps failing like it’s 1999. So where does this leave us?

It leaves us in a new frontier which will be marked by rises, falls, implosions and explosions.

Here’s the problem: rapid acceleration, new strategies, speed, and scale are all driving this new era. The changed models of customer acquisition and distribution are driving quick wins and quick failures. Losing sight of the right growth metrics can be dangerous and a waste of value, time, and money. As such, the opportunity lies in creating tools that are compelling and useful.

Media is also changing. People are trying to figure it out. As the New Fronts come to a close we’ll be seeing some disruption and demise in the media world. Joshua Topolsky, the Co-founder of The Verge / Vox Media wrote in ‘Your Media Business Will Not Be Saved’ that the model (with its insane fragmentation) will never be the same.

If you also look at the recently published figures from Y Combinator (YC) regarding the decline of blogging and the rise of other more sophisticated business opportunities, there is real data behind how the underlying tech (and where the money exists) ebbs and flows.

Mobile and new platforms leave us in a time of high volatility but huge opportunity.

Yet, with all these technologies ultimately the market will decide.
