I just discovered this wonderful new app for the iPad: the first of a series presenting Shakespeare’s plays in both text and video format along with a wealth of multimedia resources. It’s called “Heuristic Shakespeare” and this first app deals with The Tempest. You can watch the actors speak the lines, in synchrony with the actual text. You can click on any phrase at any time to get an explanation of it, and the video automatically pauses.

As much as anything, it’s just wonderful to see great actors like Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi play these parts, even out of costume. McKellen, by the way, is listed as ‘Series Editor’.

Very much looking forward to this treatment of Shakespeare’s other plays (though my wallet isn’t!)
