Update: On the recent scam-label on our service

The reason you’re reading this blog post is because of a recent incident that got us a ‘Scam’ label on our service for a day.

On 19 September, one of our administrators received a DM threatening to get our service get a scam label. As you might know, Telegram flags a service as ‘Scam’ if it asks for money from its users.

Some of the messages were deleted but here is the missing conversation (to the best of his knowledge).

X: Your bot will get a scam label.

Admin: Who’s this?

Admin: What?

X: Like this

* X sends a picture of a scam-bot*

Admin: No we won’t, our bot is legit.

Admin: Its not a scam bot.

X: I know yours is not a scam.

Admin: then what is the problem?

X: Someone paid me to do it.

Admin: Do it

X: Ok

He claimed that someone had paid him to get us reported as a ‘scam’. LOL what? Really? We don’t really know what his intentions were. However, he likely had registered a lot of accounts on our bot that allowed him to report spam from those accounts.

We did not give much thought into this at the time. Two days later, we saw our bot being tagged as a ‘Scam’.

As usual, we immediately contacted the Telegram team @botsupport with all the information available to us at the time. Within 24 hours after they did their necessary research, the bot was restored to normal.
