Welcome to Founder Spotlight, a brand new content series where each month, we put one MAP startup under the spotlight and find out what the team has been working on, what makes them tick and what their interests are outside of their business.
First up is SpendAble!
What is SpendAble?
SpendAble is a debit card that provides a safer way for people with disability to handle money and distribute money to their support workers, and helps service providers cut their money handling admin time by 60% or more.
Who is the team behind SpendAble?
Reece Miller | Chief Executive Officer
Reece is a Melbourne local and grew up in Reservoir. He loves most high adrenaline sports, especially snowboarding and water skiing. SpendAble is the second company he has co-founded.
Josh Byron | Head of Customer & Growth
Josh grew up in Sydney and moved to Melbourne during the pandemic and met Reece through the Northcote Park Football Club. He is super passionate about his work at SpendAble and creating a social impact.
Gal Beeri | Head of Customer Success
Gal migrated to Melbourne from Israel nearly two years ago and in another life, worked for the Israeli Prime Minister. Gal has a family member with autism, so the work that SpendAble does is very close to his heart.
What are SpendAble’s main focuses at the moment?
35% of people with a disability report financial abuse. We are unified behind our main goal that every payment made for a vulnerable person by a worker or family member should be through a digital and auditable method to protect them from this abuse. SpendAble is the debit card 2.0 for older people, people living with a disability and the people that support them.
At the moment we are focused on getting people with a disability, their guardians, service providers and the government to buy into this goal. We want to provide the best onboarding and customer success pathway for every SpendAble user.
We are currently making our mobile apps and web portals more intuitive and refined from the user feedback we have received.
What is your favourite thing to do in Melbourne?
We all love getting our heart rates up! You’ll find us filling the weekend with long distance running, football, cricket or water skiing. If we had more time we’d throw snow skiing and surfing into the mix too — but that’s not the startup life, for now.
Which show/podcast/book are you currently bingeing?
Josh — I’m getting stuck into Switch and Slight Edge — they are both great books!
Reece — Not really a podcast, but I’m addicted to guided meditations at night to get me to sleep!
Gal — I continuously listen to Startup for Startup, The Customer Success Channel, and Think Fast, Talk Smart podcasts. Currently, I am reading the full biography of Albert Einstein as well as M is for (Data) Monkey.
