Founder Spotlight: Meet Vimi Co-Founder, Daniel Tan
Welcome to Founder Spotlight, a new content series where each month we put one MAP startup under the spotlight to find out more about the team, what they like to do outside of their business and what their current focuses are.
This month we caught up with Vimi Co-Founder, Daniel Tan!
Hey Daniel, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us firstly, what is Vimi?
Vimi is an online video production workflow solution which allows customers to create agency-level marketing videos at a fifth of the price, and I’m really proud of the cost-effective, accessible product we have created. Vimi makes it easy for anyone to use video content to support their organisation.
Fantastic! Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what your role at Vimi is?
Daniel Tan | CEO and Business Operations Lead
I’m the CEO and Business Operations Lead at Vimi. I moved from Malaysia to Melbourne in 2015 and then relocated to Adelaide in 2019. After graduating from my Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Melbourne in 2017, I started a digital marketing agency called Pencil Rocket and this was what inspired Vimi.
Outside of my startup, I love a good board game, bouldering at some of the gyms around Melbourne and testing out my cooking skills in the kitchen at home!
Amazing! Can you tell us what’s new with Vimi and is there anything in the pipeline at the moment?
It’s been pretty exciting actually! Just recently, I have personally been nominated for an award in Victoria, which I can’t really talk too much about right now, but I can hopefully share more information with the MAP team in the next few months!
Vimi has also been approved for a $100,000 grant from the South Australian government, as part of their Seed-Start program. This money will really help us to accelerate the build of our MVP, ready for launch in December. We are so excited and extremely grateful to the SA government for the support!
Congratulations, that is huge news and the entire team must be really excited! Can you also tell us what you are all like as a team?
Our team comes from a variety of different backgrounds and countries: India, Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as Australia. We really value equality and this value extends into our work. We believe that people should all have the opportunity to create videos and that they should be accessible and affordable. We all love storytelling and we started this journey by creating a documentary series to showcase successful entrepreneurs in Victoria.
That is great to hear. We’d really like to know what you are interested in outside of work?
I absolutely love climbing and bouldering, especially climbing outside in nature. I do it around four times a week. Exercising helps me to de-stress and calm my nerves.
I also really like improv — I’ve even managed to introduce this onto the MAP floor!
