In an interview with The Los Angeles Times in 1993, Rice said,

I was particularly stunned by the casting of Cruise, who is no more my Vampire Lestat than Edward G. Robinson is Rhett Butler.

This was just one of the things I didn’t know about the movie. But with Rice’s death, I’ve learned a little bit more about her life and work.
