What is the Role of Teachers in Education?
Role of the Teacher
Teachers have moved away from the traditional roles as the controller, to now the prompter. Teachers no longer transmit themselves to students; they encourage students to think creatively. Moreover, teachers encourage students to create, communicate, and collaborate with sources of information. Teachers are content producers and consumers. They’ve moved away from being the central, or dominant, force in the classroom to becoming an equal participate in the learning experience (Renzetti, 2019).
Learning Sciences International helps teachers help students grow as leaders and communicators. Hence, teachers plan with intentions and allow for students do the work, meanwhile, provoke their thinking. For example, Adam Arthur, A.P. Macro Economics Teacher, talks about how he used to spend 30 to 40 minutes lecturing, then handing out to students an activity for them to recall information; additionally, projects weren’t introduced to students until weeks into the lesson plan and it was at most in completed. Now Adam Arthur practices a guided discovery approach with student centered activities. He watches the student work and shows off what they know through a performance-based approach; meanwhile, guides them throughout the process (LSI: Learning Sciences International, 2019).
