Sandra Birchmore grew up in Stoughton, Massachusetts, a town of about 28,000 people located about 20 miles south of Boston. Like many children, she had dreams and ambitions for her future. In 2010, at the tender age of 12, Sandra took a step that would significantly impact the course of her life: she joined the Stoughton Police Explorers Academy.
The Police Explorers program is designed to educate young people about careers in law enforcement. For Sandra, it may have represented an exciting opportunity to learn about a potential future career, meet new friends, and engage with her community.
