Blue Pheasant In Me
“Lazy Justice” — Kuzan
I once listened to a podcast about One Piece. One question that is always asked at the end of the podcast is: “which characters in One Piece are you?”. There are hundreds if not thousands of characters in One Piece and I think it’s impossible if there isn’t a single character that you can see yourself in. I’m trying to put myself in the interviewee’s situation and started to think… who could it possibly be? 🤔 After a long thought, I guess I am Aokiji.
Every navy officer in One Piece somehow has their sense of justice, often proclaimed as a motto by themselves. His motto is “lazy justice”. You see… Aokiji is a laid-back fellow. He can’t even stand up when talking to the straw hats. He almost shows no interest in anything around him. He’s just a chill man who likes to ride his bicycle across the sea. He’s the personification of “Mendokusai (めんどくさい)” or in my language 🇮🇩 ”ah repot dah”.
Even though he’s a laid-back person, Aokiji has a moral code that he always holds onto. He always does things that he thinks are morally correct to him, even if it means disobeying orders or overlooking his job as a marine officer. This trait of his has been shown countless times during the series.
When we first met him, he decided to leave Luffy and the crew cause he’s once indebted to Garp, Luffy’s grandpa. He let Robin leave Ohara, out of respect for his friend Saul’s wishes — then silently watches Robin through her life even though the World Government obviously wants her. The most memorable one is of course when he’s against the idea of Akainu becoming a fleet admiral. Usually, he shows no interest in the navy’s business, but suddenly he strongly opposed and a duel occurs in Punk Hazard.
Then there’s me.
I consider myself a lazy person. I could stay at home on the weekends just spending the time doing nonsense. Mostly just watching Youtube or napping for 3 hours. I’m even too lazy to buy a new pair of jeans even though I have already started working in the office again. Since I still have one pair, I just use that one again and again from time to time. “Getting my motorbike out” often be my consideration for going out cause I’m too lazy to get my motorbike in once I got home.
But just like Kuzan, I kinda had “core” values in me that I always hold onto, and I always act in accordance with those values. I do things that are considered different from what the social norm condones because it differs from my values. Sometimes, I put aside my position and do things without caring what other people think of me. I show no interest in certain things where most people put their attention, like for example what’s hot and popular these days. But when some things did pique my interest, I can completely change one-eighty and become a freak about it. I will put all of my efforts into it and spend all of my energy. Like Kuzan when he finally stood up to face Akainu.
So if you’re a One Piece fan, here’s my final question for you: which One Piece character do you think you are?
