Let’s Talk About Alcoholic Liver Disease

And how most of the symptoms are outside of the liver

After my father died from alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in July 2016, I’ve been a passionate explorer and writer about this condition. Mainly because the personal connection, although sad, has ignited a passion to help others. But also, ALD is a very baffling condition that seems to creep through the body unnoticed until the liver just can’t fight anymore. Whoever gets diagnosed with the condition at an early stage is a lucky person, but only if they decide to make a change.

Unfortunately alcoholic liver disease is more difficult to diagnose and treat than all the other liver diseases. There are over a hundred types of liver diseases; everything from viral Hepatitis C to autoimmune liver disease. All of the diseases cause very similar symptoms and with the same outcomes.

However, ALD has the distinct feature of popping up out of the blue, often when it’s too late to do anything about it. This surprise factor has a lot to do with the nature of denial in alcoholism; the alcoholic really doesn’t want to know that their drinking is doing any damage.
