Sweet Temptation’s Trap
Out from the sweetness
emerges a silent killer.
A deceptive delight.
Sugar threads through our veins
become more potent with each indulgence,
mastering the art of heart-blocking each time it’s consumed.
Every bite, a hidden hazard.
A treat to soothe cravings,
a concealed foe with charm,
a paradox of pleasure and pain.
And, in some way, a boon to a predatory industry.
The far-reaching influence of sugar extends
to comfort us with its taste after a stressful day,
lulls us with a short-lived song of joy, and we face the toll.
I ponder,
how a substance can promise energy and happiness
yet manage to lead us to the brink so frequently.
It’s almost as if
the allure is the trap,
a signal to its makers to show they still control us.
They witness our delight in consumption
and display sweetness to “bring comfort”
like a masked adversary.
