“Mama, were you a hippie?” I glanced up from folding bath towels.“Gracious, no. What on earth gave you that idea?” Her hands went limp and fell to her lap as she laughed, preventing her from continuing to match socks momentarily. ¶ Puzzled by her answer, I spewed my list of reasons quickly. “Well, you don’t wear fancy clothes or makeup. You wear your hair in braids. Or sometimes you wear bandannas. ¶ “You’ll have to trust me that I was a little too old to be a hippie.”
