Cracking the toughest entrance test in India is about hard work and perseverance. But having a few tricks up your sleeve can give you an advantage over the competition. I know some of you might not be aware of it. I will share with you a few of the tried and tested ones which helped me crack the exam.
- Be calm Your temperament during the exam is extremely critical to your performance. Give time to understanding the question and try to avoid silly mistakes.
- Read the questions properly It is important to read the question and understand it properly before attempting it. Do not make the mistake of assuming data which is not provided in the question.
- Strategize your paper solving pattern Try categorizing the questions into easy, medium and difficult. I used to start off with the easier MCQs eventually moving towards the more difficult ones. Watch out for questions with multiple correct answers. Attempt them only if there is no negative marking or you are sure of the answers.
- Method of Elimination This technique is very common among those who crack JEE. Discard high and low values and look for options that appear to be close or similar. Try reverse engineering by fitting the options into the question wherever possible (not a recommended alternative to preparing for JEE but may help save time)
- Going with your gut feeling If you are not sure of a question, try guessing it. Even though this is not a the best approach, deleting the incorrect options and correlating the remaining options with the question may help you get the right answer. And avoid changing the answers at the last moment. The first answer is generally the right answer.
- Manage your time well Suppose you think a question can be solved in 4 minutes and its been 6 minutes already and you haven’t figured out a way, leave it and move on to the next. Utilize your time effectively and leave such questions for the last.
Finally, do remember to keep yourself physically and mentally alert before and during the exam. Don’t worry if you find the paper to be tough. It will be tough for others as well. Focus on your performance and keep your hopes high. Best of luck!
