13 Bands to Listen to When Getting Shit Done

Music fills my entire day. It’s a crucial part of my workflow, essential for my commute and any form of exercise (especially running), and helpful when trying to combat insomnia. Then of course, there’s when I actually do fun things such as see a live band, or go to a dive bar that has a jukebox with friends.

Sound familiar?

Music’s most prominent role is in aiding my productivity, as the majority of my day-to-day work requires a lot of focus — as yours likely does, whether you’re a writer, developer, designer, data analyst, etc.

Some people turn to classical music for focus. I am not one of them. Here are some classic-alternatives to consider for when you really need to get shit done. Give them a listen, then let me know what you think! There’s few things I love more than a good music debate.

1. Explosions in the Sky

EITS are a crowd pleaser and go-to for many writers I’ve talked to. Although considered post-rock, their music has almost a classic feel but with an edge, what the band refers to as “cathartic mini-symphonies,” according to Wikipedia. Their music is nothing short of lovely, and tracks average at about nine min long. My favorite track is is “Your Hand In Mine.”

2. We Were Promised Jet Packs

We Were Promised Jetpacks is an under-the-radar bands who’s music continues to get better. Their lyrics tilt on the emo side at times, but the music itself is really beautiful. The Scottish accent doesn’t hurt either. Their new album Unraveling that just came out these week is pretty fantastic. Try listening to “Peace of Mind” without falling in love with it.

3. New Madrid

Atlanta-based New Madrid is a new favorite of mine after seeing them open for Reptar a month or so ago. They know how to jam. There’s also a clear theme of post-rock so far in this list. I listen to the 12-minute long “And She Smiles” almost every day on my morning commute.

4. Alt-J

Anyone who knows me, knows I am obsessed with Alt-J. Their recently released sophomore album, This is All Yours, is especially good to vibe to. It’s also my go-to when trying to sleep. I can’t stop listening to their Bill Withers’ cover of “Lovely Day.” Also, seeing them play a NPR First Listen show at LPR was one of the best moments for me, ever.

5. Wild Yaks

Ok. This one is not for everyone, but I can complete almost any task while listening to some solid punk music. Brooklyn-based Wild Yaks are especially effective for when you need a little pep in your step. They are also a very fun live show, and always play DIY venues. “Comes Close to You” is my jam.

6. Ty Segall

Another punk act. I’ve been on a huge Ty Segall kick lately, and actually listening to him while editing / finishing this post. Just try not to dance in your chair. He instantly puts me in an good mood. I think I am even going to break down and buy his new album considering how Mikal Cronin plays on it, and it’s only available on Drag City. In the meantime, here’s one of my older faves of his. “The Drag” is currently my go-to running song.

7. Department of Eagles

Known for his role as guitarist and vocals in Grizzly Bear, Daniel Rossen (my fave solo artist) was also once frontman for Department of Eagles. As much as I love both bands, I almost like DoE better. Almost. Most famous for “No One Does It Like You,” “Too Little Too Late” is my favorite track of theirs.

8. The Antlers

I’ve never seen them live, but I feel that The Antlers often go under appreciated. “Rolled Together” will always be one of my favorite songs.

9. Menomena

Another band that should be on more people’s radars. I can listen to Menomena when doing anything, honestly. All of their albums are solid, and “Dirty Cartoons” makes me want to run away to Florida for a weekend.

10. Caribou

I am a recent Caribou convert. I’ve always had a single or two in my rotation, but Dan Snaith really won me over with their new album Our Love. Although he records most music using mixers and a drum kit, the live act seems pretty great. Seeing them in November. So much dancing.

11. Jose Gonzalez

For the Jack Johnson fans out there who need something more chill, brah. True Confessions: I loved and cried at the Secret Life of Walter Mitty movie.

12. Tommy Guerrero

Great for those who like to zone out to some cozy instrumentals. I don’t know what that means either.

13. The Orwells

Bringing things back to life, yet another punk / post-punk band. Big Orwells fan. Their new album Disgraceland released in June is one of my favorites this year. But, here’s an older track that gets me going in the mornings.

And my favorite track from the new album, because I can’t help myself.

13. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

No list is complete without some good old Soul or Motown. Given, I probably like listening to Sharon Jones while working because she is a total badass and has a special place in my heart, I still suggest giving them a try.

What did I miss, homies?
