The search for meaning is that single thread in the tapestry of human existence that weaves purpose and resilience into our lives. As Viktor Frankl, the well-known psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, observed so astutely, “Man’s search for meaning is the primary motivation in his life.” This becomes all the more imperative as we navigate the stormy waters of life’s adversities.

The Importance of Meaning in Adversity

When facing the worst of circumstances, it’s all too natural to slide into the abyss of “Why me?” Such a question, though obviously natural, takes us down the self-pity path toward helplessness. But if only we could shift our thinking, we would be transformed; finding meaning in those same struggles would change us, opening trials into opportunities for us to discover ourselves.

“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” — Friedrich Nietzsche.

Friedrich Nietzsche’s deep quote underlines the strength of meaning as a source of resilience. When we understand the ‘why’ behind experiences, we find the strength to bear and overcome the most trying obstacles.

The Subjective Nature of Meaning

As Frankl put it, one of the fascinating things about meaning is that it is subjective. Meaning can vary from person to person and can change at any given moment. The implication of this subjectivity is that there is no universal formula to find meaning; what resonates deeply with one individual may not hold the same significance for another.

Crucially, it’s important to recognize that things and events do not inherently possess meaning. We, as conscious beings, are the ones who ascribe meaning to our experiences and circumstances. This understanding is pivotal because it empowers us to shape our interpretations of life events, including adversities.

Meaning can take many forms:

  • Learning valuable lessons from our experiences
  • Finding ways of making our struggles useful either to ourselves or others.
  • Gaining new knowledge or insights
  • Developing empathy and compassion through shared experiences

The possibilities for deriving meaning are as diverse as human experiences themselves. Because meaning comes from inside in the form of personal insights, not from outside as mere information, the process of finding meaning is deeply individual and often transformative.

The Importance of Mentoring in Finding Meaning

Given how personal, and often elusive, meaning can be, having a mentor can be a great help in our search. The knowledge that we ourselves are the authors of meaning in our lives gives shape to the role of a mentor. Not a figure who prescribes what our experiences should mean, but one who, as a guide, provides:

  1. An External Perspective: Mentors can help us step back from our immediate circumstances and view our situation from a different angle, often revealing possible meanings that we might have overlooked.
  2. Compassionate Presence: A good mentor creates a safe space where one can explore and reflect, bringing empathy and understanding to help us grapple with difficult questions and find our own insights.
  3. Wealth of Experience: Drawing on their own life experiences, mentors can share stories that cast light on possible ways to meaning without imposing their understanding on our unique situations.
  4. Curious Inquiry: Through thoughtful questions and active listening, mentors can help us dig deeper into our experiences and uncover layers of meaning we hadn’t considered personally.
  5. Supportive Challenge: Mentors will gently challenge our assumptions and encourage us to view our circumstances from other angles, thus enabling us to make our own meaning in life.

A mentor doesn’t provide us with meaning; they assist us in finding it ourselves.

A Personal Journey: From Tech to Coaching

Let me share a personal story. When I decided to move on from my corporate career in the field of technology into the new mission of being a coach and mentor, the transition was not easy at all. On one hand, the pull toward this new direction was very strong, sensing that this was my true calling. I, on the other hand, felt lost and cut off from my past, with no idea of how to connect the dots between where I was coming from in tech and where I was headed now.

In a moment of such uncertainty, having my mentor by my side meant a lot to me. Through talking with my mentor, the thought of something very deep was instigated in me: everything that we do in life enriches us, even things that we would most like to forget. Together, we started reframing my past, exploring how all of my experiences in tech — something I had been thinking about as detriments — could actually be quite valuable in my new role as a coach and a mentor.

The difference was transformational. What looked like a painful transition initially now became an exciting opportunity — to create a unique approach to coaching and mentoring. Combining my tech background with my passion for helping others, I found a really different way to add value to my new field.

This experience demonstrates to a greater extent how a mentor can help us find meaning in our life’s circumstances, even when we feel at our most lost and disconnected. By reframing our experiences with their insight and fresh perspective, a mentor is able to bring light to the hidden connections and valuable lessons of our journey, turning challenges into opportunities for growth and self-discovery.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Under the guidance of a mentor, we can start to view our challenges not as an insurmountable obstacle, but as an opportunity for deep personal growth. This change in attitude will then empower us to:

  • Cultivate resilience and inner strength.
  • Developing a better understanding of ourselves and of our values.
  • Discover hidden talents or skills.
  • Find new ways to give back to others and our community.
  • Gain wisdom that can be shared to help others facing similar challenges.

Mentoring provides a good framework for making the best of adversity by transforming it into meaning — that is, seeing something of value even in the darkest of clouds.

Conclusion

As we navigate life’s inevitable peaks and valleys, the search for meaning becomes our constant companion. The search is deeply personal, and yet we need not make it alone. With the help of mentors — compassionate, experienced persons who share wisdom and support — we can strike the rich veins of meaning that run through even our most trying experiences.

Through mentoring and active search for meaning in our circumstances, we arm ourselves with the means not only to survive the hardships of life but to grow, thrive, and find purpose in the midst of adversity. In doing so, we honor Frankl’s insight into the remarkable meaning-making capacity of the human spirit, transforming personal challenges into sources of strength, wisdom, and deep life purpose.

Take Action

As you reflect on this article, take these steps to begin your journey to discover meaning through mentoring:

  1. Identify a current challenge in your life. How might you reframe it as an opportunity for growth?
  2. Think about someone in your life who could serve as a mentor. Reach out and initiate a conversation about the meaning of life’s troubles.
  3. If you’ve overcome significant obstacles, consider becoming a mentor yourself. Your experiences could be the key to helping someone else find meaning in their struggles.

Remember, this search for meaning is for all of life. Bring curiosity and openness to the task, supported by those able to guide you along the way.
