Discernment of Spirits (5)

Discernment and God’s Word

In the last few articles, we’ve established that with discernment we can:

  1. Sense danger and avoid it
  2. Sense God and align with Him
  3. Discover the enemy’s strategy and outsmart him
  4. Guard our heart by revealing the hidden influence
  5. Deal with influences and preserve relationships
  6. Make worship more fruitful
  7. Walk with wisdom through life

How can we begin to walk in discernment?

God Gives

Discernment is a gift of the Spirit. We necessarily cannot create a formula to manufacture discernment. God by the Holy Spirit can apportion to us as He wills. He has full knowledge of happenings around us and the world, so He is able to reassign resources for optimal results.

We Can Ask

While God can freely give, we can also engage God. In the context of spiritual things, Paul says, we should covet what is good. So, we can ask! I do not particularly think that asking can change God’s mind if He doesn't intend for us to have it in the first place. What asking does is it bring us to awareness for what is possible and available, it brings us to a place of responsibility to be a partner, not just a beneficiary, and it helps us to be expectant for the gift of God.

Scriptures

The word of God is the foundation for all manifestations of the Spirit. That is how we discover them. That is how we improve on them. That is how we get corrected in them.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Discernment in summary is measuring everything on the scale of the word of God and discovering where it stands. It is using the word of God as the divider, the differentiator, and the distributor. It is allowing God’s word to enter a situation and divide and arrange things by the standard of God’s word. We see where things fall on the scale. Even thoughts and intentions can be discerned, categorized, discarded, or embraced.

The beginning of discernment is measuring everything by the word of God. This begins by looking up direct references to what God says about the situation. So anything that seeks to leave out the scriptures before we deal with situations is a subtle attack on us growing in the gift of discernment. Soon enough we discover that the things not explicitly names in scriptures will also need to be discerned. This time we will need to depend on the author of scriptures himself, the Holy Spirit, to put everything on the scale of the Word of God — Jesus.

Until we are familiar with the voice of God in the scriptures, we cannot recognize the voice of God outside of the scriptures. Until we can place things side by side with the scriptures and discover God’s heart, we cannot learn to walk in discernment.
