American Dream
A stand-up comedy sketch, by GPT-2 (#reMERZ) and DALL·E
The idea behind the American Dream is that men will do what men want, pay what they want, have what they want, when they want.
This is a very superficial view of what is happening in this country, since the realists are no longer men. I’m talking about the mainstream, which is a bunch of talented guys with nice suits, nice cars, nice kids, nice wives, and nice homes in which to raise them. It is a different place now than it was 30 years ago, because we have the technology and the money to do anything.
We have the Internet. We have the Super Bowl. We have the right to print money and speculate in stocks, bonds, or commodities. We are rich enough to be able to buy an apartment on the Upper East Side or to get a nice wife and raise two kids by yourself in a nice neighborhood. We are not stupid, and we have never been.
So it is not always easy to get out of the house, to get a job, or to find love. And the job is not always that great either.
Sadly, however, the American Dream has the disadvantage of being a permanent state in many people’s lives. But it is not that we are artificially limited by high taxes and regulations or by being surrounded by hostile foreign regimes.
We have good universities, too, though the sciences are not exactly booming. We have good arts organizations, too, though whose patrons seem to be less than generous. We have good museums, though our museums are often a bit of a joke.
All over this country we have the freedom to do anything we want, often at great personal risk. It is one thing for a man to be a coffee table-size display case artist and historian, but quite another for a woman to be three feet in the air as a virtual airplane.
Anyone could make a great art show in a museum, but it is quite another for a woman to be a 20-foot rock climber and a surfer. There is no competition for the public’s attention, but there is a tremendous amount of money to be made by the rich.
Still, the whole movement of the American Dream is, itself, a false one.
It is simply the way things are going in this country.
