I took my hand out of the water, crossed the room, and said to myself,

“What am I?”

I had nothing to do but be.

It was the first time I’d ever seen the ground, or seen water.
The first time I’d ever seen those things up close.

Then, all of a sudden, I had a boat. The first time I’d ever seen a boat.

Then, I got down on the sand, and jumped in.
Then I got down in the water, and I swam in that water.
Then I got down — yes, I got down — and I’d been there for a while, and all I could think about was that.

Then, about that time, I changed my name.

I had a house, but I used to go to Hawaii, and I’d been there ever since, and I used to sail there, and I used to talk to my grandmother about what I was going to do, and I’d get into my room, and it were all going well, but the wedding was coming up.

I’d been in the ocean for a while, so I was used to a good deal of water. After I’d gotten home, I changed my name.
