WILLIAM SHERMAN: The Senses of Silence (Penguin Press, £2.00)

Addendum: DREAM SHIFT’S OF THE NANO CLASS

WILLIAM SHERMAN: The Senses of Silence is a book of poems set in the future -and is therefore a future work outside the realm of our present existence. The poems are set in a future where people have no need to work, are free to travel, and are not bound to a place by the need to prove themselves to anyone.

Here is what William Sherman wrote to his lover:

William Sherman

“I write with my fingers on the keyboard, my fingers on the keys of knowledge. My fingers are my eyes, my ears, my hands, my arms, my ears and hands are my ears, my arms and hands are my ears, my arms and hands are my ears. And I’m not looking at anybody, I’m looking at myself. I’m looking at myself as I write. I see the words which I write, but I’m not looking. I’m not looking at anybody, I’m looking at myself. And I’m not looking in the direction of anyone, I am looking in the direction of myself. I am looking as I write.”

William Sherman’s work is not about the future, but about the present. He was a professor at Boston University -where he also taught -before he became an actor.

In a letter to his brother, William Sherman wrote:

“I have always found theatre, acting, music to be my great love. I am a believer in the power of acting to make the world, and myself, in the world, a little bit better. I am not saying that I am now convinced, but I am sure I am.”

William Sherman died on November 27, 1974 at the age of 59.
