Monberbutch, by Fujun Luan

Back to my innocent childhood, as I discovered the magic power of image processing with an image editor, I was eager to build in Mona Lisa portrait faces of my friends. Just for fun. Admittedly, it was amateurish work of mine, because, you know, you had to

  • cut out from a photo your friends face shapes
  • place it properly on the Mona Lisa image
  • make colors and (un)sharness appropriate

and nobody can Sfumato, besides of Maestro Leonardo.

I didn’t knew, that one day you just need some couple of clicks — and you’ll get it. With help of Artificial Intelligence and the process called “Deep Painterly Harmonization”.

Fujun Luan and a group of researchers experimented with Deep Learning — and developed this method. Here you can see results. And results are unbelievable.

How does it work?

Step 1. Take one famous paiting. Say, ask Pointillists:

Georges Seurat — Un dimanche après-midi à l’Île de la Grande Jatte

Step 2. Now paste there an alien element, like a Grand Piano (because why not)
